NEW Exhibition - Transitions - Joanna Dudson Scott - Riverlore ART gallery Marlborough

This spring, visitors to Joanna Dudson Scott’s Riverlore Gallery at Renwick in Marlborough, will be delighted to see her long awaited new exhibition, Transitions - seven large works, each exploring the folds, passes, valleys and pathways of imagined, but South Island-inspired high country landscapes, plus eight smaller studies.

“I have always constructed landscapes in my mind, from all the actual places I know.  The mountains, rivers and plains are key elements, but it is the spaces between that capture my imagination, as if they represent passages in life.  Through my paintings I am attempting to share the landscapes of my imagination.  My device of literally constructing the canvasses, piece by piece, is my way of drawing attention to the relationships between the parts.”

Joanna seeks to entice the viewer deep into her works, to have them go beyond the obvious, as she would wish people to do with the environment.  “In this new series I have been experimenting with using river silt, enjoying swirling it onto the canvas panels at the third stage of undercoat, so the environment becomes part of the painting.  The technique is giving me a whole new way of capturing the effect of light on the landscape.”

The large works include some over two and half meters long and a meter high.  But the small studies are just as compelling. “My process is as much a part of my art as the finished paintings, and I felt I wanted to share more of my process with my audience, hence these smaller studies that are like windows into what is going on in my head when I am developing an idea for a painting.  I’m looking forward to seeing what people who think they know my work very well, make of these new little revelations.”
